At Casa Noteboom, our curriculum is emergent, intentional, and rooted in relationships. We design learning experiences around children’s natural curiosity while guiding them with a deep understanding of child development and educational practice.
Rather than following a rigid, pre-packaged program, we observe, listen, and respond. The questions children ask, the ideas they explore during play, and the themes that spark their imagination become the foundation for meaningful academic and social growth.
This approach allows children to feel ownership of their learning while ensuring they are supported, challenged, and thoughtfully guided. It nurtures curiosity, promotes independence, and lays the foundation for lifelong learning.

Themes often grow from children’s interests, such as dinosaurs, gardening, architecture, storytelling, local wildlife, cultural traditions, or scientific wonders.
These interests are expanded through intentional integration of:
• Literacy and storytelling in Spanish and English
• Mathematical reasoning and real-world problem solving
• Scientific inquiry and hands-on experimentation
• Creative arts and self-expression
• Cultural exploration and bilingual communication

The Power of Mixed-Age Learning
Our curriculum comes alive within a mixed-age community (ages 3–10).
Younger children learn by observing and interacting with older peers, expanding their language, confidence, and problem-solving skills. Older children deepen their understanding by mentoring, explaining ideas, and taking leadership roles.
This natural cycle of collaboration strengthens:
• Communication skills
• Empathy and responsibility
• Academic confidence
• Social-emotional maturity
Mixed-age learning is not accidental. it is a powerful and intentional design that mirrors real-life communities and family structures.
This exploration of light, shadows, and reflection began when children noticed how Magna-Tiles reflected colorful patterns in the sunlight.
Through experimentation, art, writing, and scientific observation, children explored concepts such as transparency, translucency, opacity, and reflection while documenting their discoveries about light. In our mixed-age environment, children collaborated across ages while also engaging with materials independently, allowing older learners to deepen their understanding while younger children explored experiences that support their developmental growth.
Experiences like these reflect the way our emergent curriculum grows from children’s natural curiosity and evolves into meaningful opportunities for investigation and learning.
This exploration of dinosaurs began with a single question and evolved into a rich, multi-layered learning experience. Through research, storytelling, art, construction, and scientific inquiry, one child’s curiosity became the foundation for deep and meaningful learning, reflecting how our emergent curriculum unfolds.

Emergent learning at Casa Noteboom is responsive, but never accidental.
While learning grows from children’s interests and ideas, experiences are thoughtfully planned to support language development, reasoning skills, problem-solving, and emotional growth across ages.
Through careful observation and meaningful relationships, each child is met where they are and gently supported toward the next stage of development.
This approach fosters a sense of ownership, strengthens creativity and independent thinking, and encourages children to become active participants in their learning. Whether building, storytelling, investigating nature, or engaging in group discussions, children learn through meaningful, hands-on experiences that reflect who they are and what excites them most.
The result is learning that feels joyful and natural, yet grounded in intention, purpose, and developmental understanding.
